When is Easter Monday?
In 2026, Easter Monday falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a New Zealand public holiday.
History of Easter Monday
Easter Monday completes New Zealandβs statutory Easter weekend. In Christian practice it follows the celebration of the resurrection; in the wider civic calendar it is a shared day for family time, sport, travel and the seasonal change from summer to autumn.
Together with Good Friday, the holiday creates a four-day break for many workers. Schools, businesses, government counters and visitor services may have their own Easter schedules, while essential services continue on separately published rosters.
Easter Monday fell on April 6 in 2026. Its date is calculated from Western Easter and is already a Monday, so it has no Mondayisation mechanism. Unlike Good Friday and Easter Sunday, Easter Monday is not one of the Shop Trading Hours Act's restricted retail days, although many offices and schools close because it is a national public holiday. Under the Holidays Act, a paid day off depends on whether the date would otherwise be a working day for the employee. Someone required to work receives at least time-and-a-half and, when it is otherwise a working day, an alternative holiday. An open hospital, transport service, hospitality business or exempt shop therefore does not mean that employee rights disappear.
How Easter Monday is observed
A national public holiday on Monday, April 6, 2026; Easter Monday itself is not one of the restricted shop-trading days.
