When is Rubén Darío Day?

In 2026, Rubén Darío Day falls on Sunday, January 18, 2026. Under Article 68 of Nicaragua’s Labour Code, a national holiday that falls on Sunday is compensated on Monday, January 19, 2026.

History of Rubén Darío Day

January 18 honors Rubén Darío, born Félix Rubén García Sarmiento in Metapa, Nicaragua, in 1867. His poetry and prose helped shape modernismo, a literary movement that renewed Spanish-language writing through musical language, cosmopolitan imagery and formal experimentation.

Darío’s life crossed Nicaragua, Central America, Chile, Argentina, Spain and France. Books such as Azul… and Prosas profanas made him an international literary figure, while later work carried a more reflective and political tone. In Nicaragua, he remains a powerful cultural reference rather than simply a name in a school syllabus.

Law No. 1272 made January 18 a national paid holiday from 2026, explicitly recognizing Darío’s global legacy and role in national cultural identity. Readings, school programs and cultural events give the date its most natural form.

UNESCO’s Memory of the World program records Darío’s manuscripts, books, poems, letters and personal objects in the archive held by the Nicaraguan Institute of Culture and the Rubén Darío Museum. The collection connects the public holiday to primary literary material and to two relevant places: Ciudad Darío, where he was born, and León, where he died in 1916.

How Rubén Darío Day is observed
