When is Western Easter?
In 2026, Western Easter falls on Sunday, April 5, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.
History of Western Easter
Western Easter in Palestine celebrates the resurrection of Jesus in Catholic and Protestant churches using the Gregorian Paschal calculation. The feast is rooted in church life across Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Ramallah, Beit Jala, Beit Sahour and other Palestinian communities, rather than existing only as an international pilgrimage occasion. Holy Week moves from Palm Sunday through the Triduum to Easter worship, and the Sunday celebration commonly brings scripture, hymns, candles, family greetings and the end of Lenten disciplines.
The General Personnel Council's employee guide distinguishes Western Christian dates from Eastern Christian dates and grants relevant Christian public employees calendar-specific leave. Easter is also named in the State of Palestine's 2026 diplomatic list, but those sources do not establish a universal Sunday closure for every PA body, employer or shop. Western Easter falls on April 5 in 2026, while Orthodox Easter falls on April 12, so presenting a single undifferentiated Easter date would be inaccurate.
Local worship and access remain announcement-dependent. Jerusalem church authorities, parish clergy, municipalities and transport providers publish the practical schedules, and permits or security measures may affect attendance. Conditions in Gaza and the West Bank can require services to be relocated, reduced or held privately. The calculated date is reliable for the Western ecclesiastical calendar; it cannot guarantee that a procession, crossing or visitor site will operate normally.
How Western Easter is observed
A Western Christian feast with calendar-specific leave for eligible Christian public employees; it is not a universal Palestinian Authority closure.
Traditions of Western Easter
Easter vigil and worship
Catholic and Protestant congregations gather for vigil or Sunday services with scripture, candles, hymns and the proclamation of the resurrection.
Family Easter meals
Families visit after church and share festive meals, decorated eggs, cakes or sweets following Lenten practices that vary by denomination.
Parish hospitality
Congregations welcome relatives and visitors and may organise meals or children's activities when local access and pastoral conditions allow.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Palestinian official and legal guidance. Lunar dates, annual government notices and local-service schedules should be confirmed against official notices.
