When is Carnival Tuesday?

In 2026, Carnival Tuesday falls on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. It is a Panamanian national mandatory paid rest day under the Labour Code.

History of Carnival Tuesday

Carnival Tuesday is the final and most intense day of the pre-Lenten Carnival season. Its date changes every year because it is calculated from Easter: it falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, immediately before Ash Wednesday.

Panama’s Carnival is not a single event with one script. The best-known celebrations in Las Tablas sit alongside major events in Panama City and smaller local festivals that draw on distinct regional identities. Music, costumes, water, parades and informal reunions share the same calendar.

Article 46 of the Labour Code treats Carnival Tuesday as a national mandatory rest day. Workers who perform exceptional work on the day have statutory pay and compensatory-rest protections, while travellers should expect very busy roads and services.

Official tourism material describes culecos, comparsas, floats and artistic performances but also shows how strongly Carnival depends on place. Rival street groups in Las Tablas, city stages and provincial traditions are related rather than interchangeable. Because the celebration ends before Ash Wednesday, the Tuesday also marks a transition from public excess toward the Christian season of Lent.

How Carnival Tuesday is observed

Carnival Tuesday is a national mandatory rest day. Parades, culecos, music and heavy interprovincial travel are widespread before celebrations close and Lent begins.

Traditions of Carnival Tuesday

  • Civic ceremonies

Schools, municipalities and public institutions may hold flag ceremonies, speeches, bands and historical programs. Participation depends on the community.

  • Family gatherings

The day off creates time for a shared meal, visiting relatives or a quieter day at home alongside the public commemoration.

  • Music and dance

Bands, dance groups and local performers turn a historical anniversary into a public celebration, especially during the November patriotic season.

  • Learning the history

Teachers, museums and community groups use the date to explore the people and events behind the commemoration, not just the date itself.

  • The final Carnival day

Tuesday brings the last culecos, parades and rival-group displays before festivities end and Ash Wednesday changes the public and religious rhythm.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Panama Labour Code and holiday guidance. Panama’s Labour Code has special automatic Monday-transfer rules for national and mourning days; public-sector and employer schedules can differ for non-statutory dates.
