When is Easter Saturday?

In 2026, Easter Saturday falls on Saturday, April 4, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Easter Saturday

Easter Saturday is expressly included in Papua New Guinea’s Easter public-holiday period. It falls between Good Friday and Easter Sunday and is sometimes called Holy Saturday in church calendars. The Department of Personnel Management confirmed Saturday, April 4 for 2026. Its movable date follows the Western Christian calculation of Easter and must be recalculated for each year.

Within Christian tradition, the day recalls the interval between the crucifixion and resurrection. Some congregations hold evening vigils or prepare church buildings, music and food for Easter Sunday. Other people experience the day mainly as part of a four-day national break. In a country with many denominations and local traditions, the balance between worship, household preparation, markets, sport and travel varies by community.

A Saturday public holiday does not mean that all weekend workers receive identical arrangements. Section 86 of the Employment Act provides payment rules for covered employees who are employed immediately before a public holiday, but casual and piece-rate workers are treated differently. Hospitals, policing, utilities, transport, hospitality and retail may continue through rosters. The official 2026 circular lists April 4 itself and should not be read as automatically creating a weekday in lieu.

How Easter Saturday is observed
