History of Foundation of Asunción Day

Foundation of Asunción Day recalls August 15, 1537, when the Spanish expedition led by Juan de Salazar y Espinosa established a fortified post beside the Paraguay River on the site of present-day Asunción. The settlement became a centre for further colonial expeditions and was later called the Mother of Cities. That familiar title should not hide the presence, agency and coercive treatment of the Cario Guaraní communities already living in the region.

Asunción developed from a fort and fragile settlement into the political capital of independent Paraguay. Municipal commemorations include historical interpretation, exhibitions, student parades, music and activity around the old centre. August 15 is also the Catholic Assumption, reflected in the city’s full name, Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción, and in religious programmes that can accompany civic ones.

Law No. 7544 makes August 15 a nationwide, non-movable holiday rather than an Asunción-only municipal date. The law also recognises it as the presidential transfer-of-command day when applicable, since Paraguay’s constitutional inaugurations occur on August 15. Essential services continue and cultural programming is especially prominent in the capital.
