History of Battle of Boquerón Day

The Battle of Boquerón was the first major engagement of the Chaco War between Paraguay and Bolivia. Bolivian forces had occupied the isolated fort, whose water access made it strategically important. Paraguayan troops under José Félix Estigarribia surrounded and attacked the position for about twenty days in September 1932. The Bolivian garrison surrendered on September 29 after severe casualties and deprivation.

In Paraguay, the victory became a central symbol of endurance and military organisation. Historical interpretation should also acknowledge the suffering of Bolivian defenders, the wider territorial conflict and the environment in which thirst and disease killed alongside weapons. Fortín Boquerón and other Chaco sites preserve material links to the war and require conservation as places of memory rather than simple triumphal scenery.

Law No. 7544 lists September 29 as a national holiday and permits the executive to move its observed closure to a neighbouring Monday. In 2026, Decree No. 6601 transferred the holiday from Tuesday September 29 to Monday September 28. The battle anniversary itself remains September 29; the page records both dates instead of silently replacing one with the other.

How Battle of Boquerón Day is observed

Battle of Boquerón Day is a movable national public holiday; memorial ceremonies keep September 29 while the official closure may shift.
