When is Battle of Arica and Flag Day?

In 2026, Battle of Arica and Flag Day falls on Sunday, June 7, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Battle of Arica and Flag Day

June 7 commemorates the Battle of Arica, fought in 1880 during the War of the Pacific, and honours Peru’s national flag. Colonel Francisco Bolognesi commanded the Peruvian defenders of the Arica garrison against a larger Chilean force. The battle ended with Chilean capture of the position and heavy losses. Peruvian remembrance focuses on duty and sacrifice while the wider conflict remains a shared and sensitive history in the region.

A decree of April 30, 1924 established June 7 as Flag Day. Ceremonies renew an oath of fidelity to the flag, display the national standard and remember Bolognesi and the defenders. Law 31788, published June 15, 2023, later amended Article 6 of Legislative Decree 713 to make June 7 a paid national holiday and required the fidelity ceremony in state entities.

Because the statute was published after June 7 in 2023, this calendar begins generating the new annual holiday in 2024 rather than retroactively presenting an earlier closure. The date remains fixed and is not automatically moved to Monday. Military and civic commemorations often centre on Lima’s Plaza Bolognesi and historical sites, while schools and public institutions organise their own flag programmes.

How Battle of Arica and Flag Day is observed

From 2024, June 7 is a fixed nationwide paid holiday marked by flag-pledge ceremonies, civic-military remembrance and education about the 1880 Battle of Arica.
