When is Saint Rose of Lima?

In 2026, Saint Rose of Lima falls on Sunday, August 30, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Saint Rose of Lima

Saint Rose of Lima was born Isabel Flores de Oliva in Lima in 1586 and died in 1617. A Dominican tertiary, she became known for intense prayer, penitential practice and care for sick and poor people in a room at her family home. Pope Clement X canonised her in 1671, making her the first person born in the Americas to be canonised by the Catholic Church.

Rose became patroness of Lima, Peru, the Americas and the Philippines, and her cult is woven into the city’s religious geography. Devotees visit the sanctuary built around places associated with her life and place written petitions into the well traditionally linked with her. Masses, processions and charitable themes recall both popular devotion and her service to vulnerable neighbours. Practices outside Lima vary by parish and household.

Legislative Decree 713 lists Santa Rosa de Lima on August 30 as a fixed national paid holiday. The National Police of Peru also honours her as its patroness, giving the date an institutional dimension. The holiday remains August 30 rather than moving to Monday. Crowd controls, shrine access and procession details are announced locally and should not be inferred from the national calendar alone.

How Saint Rose of Lima is observed
