When is Easter Sunday?
In 2026, Easter Sunday falls on Sunday, April 5, 2026. It is classified here as a Polish public holiday.
History of Easter Sunday
Easter is the central feast of the Roman Catholic calendar, and in Poland it remains one of the year's most important religious and family occasions. Holy Week leads into the Resurrection liturgy, while home preparation centres on a festive table after the more restrained days of Lent.
The date moves with the Western Christian calculation of Easter and is a statutory day off. Its strongest traditions are domestic as well as devotional: many families begin with a blessing of food on Holy Saturday, then gather on Sunday for breakfast with eggs, bread, sausage, horseradish and the cakes associated with the season.
Easter Sunday is Wielkanoc, literally the ‘Great Night,’ and follows an especially dense Polish Holy Week. The Holy Saturday food blessing is not itself the statutory holiday, but its basket—often containing eggs, bread, salt, sausage, horseradish and a symbolic lamb—prepares the Sunday table. Pisanki range from simply dyed eggs to intricate regional wax-resist or scratched designs. Some parishes celebrate the Resurrection procession late on Saturday; others hold Rezurekcja early on Sunday. The legal calendar names the first day of Easter and all Sundays as non-working days. Poland's predominantly Roman Catholic public calendar therefore follows Western Easter, while Orthodox communities keep Pascha on their own ecclesiastical date without a second nationwide statutory date.
How Easter Sunday is observed
A nationwide statutory public holiday on Western Easter Sunday. Many shops are closed and church services are especially well attended. Because this statutory feast always falls on Sunday, it does not reduce the working-time calculation under Labour Code Article 130 and does not create a substitute weekday off.

Spring visits
The long weekend gives families time for visits, walks and the first larger gatherings of spring. Polish Easter Sunday is recognisable through Rezurekcja worship, blessed święconka food, decorated pisanki and a breakfast opened by sharing eggs.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Polish government and labour-law guidance. Employer, school and local-service schedules can differ from the statutory public-holiday calendar.
