When is National Day?
In 2026, National Day falls on Tuesday, December 1, 2026. It is classified here as a Romanian public holiday.
History of National Day
Romania’s National Day commemorates 1 December 1918, when representatives at Alba Iulia proclaimed the union of Transylvania with Romania. The event became the defining symbol of the Great Union, the sequence of 1918 decisions that reshaped the Romanian state after the First World War.
The date has been National Day since 1990. It is celebrated with the tricolour, official ceremonies and military parades, especially in Bucharest and Alba Iulia. It also invites a more thoughtful kind of civic memory: modern Romania’s history includes many communities and viewpoints, and the holiday is strongest when public celebration makes room for that shared complexity.
National Day centres on the Great National Assembly at Alba Iulia on 1 December 1918, whose resolution proclaimed the union of Transylvania, Banat, Crișana and Maramureș with Romania and set out political principles for the new state. The wider Great Union also involved Bessarabia and Bukovina through separate 1918 decisions, so December 1 symbolises a process rather than a single administrative signature. Parliament selected the date as National Day through Law no. 10/1990, replacing the communist-era 23 August holiday. Alba Iulia remains the principal historical setting, while Bucharest hosts the largest military parade. Contemporary commemoration also benefits from acknowledging the resolution’s commitments and the country’s multi-ethnic history alongside ceremonial celebration.
How National Day is observed
A nationwide non-working national holiday on December 1. Major ceremonies and parades take place in Bucharest and Alba Iulia; public offices close. Romania has no general rule moving this holiday to Monday when it falls at a weekend; any public-sector bridge day requires a separate government decision and recovered working time.
