When is Russian Language Day?

In 2026, Russian Language Day falls on Saturday, June 6, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of Russian Language Day

Russian Language Day is observed on June 6, the birthday of Alexander Pushkin. A 2011 presidential decree established the date to support and develop Russian as a national cultural inheritance and language of international communication. It also overlaps with Pushkin Day, which gives the observance a strongly literary character.

The day is not a federal non-working holiday. Libraries, schools, publishers and museums may hold readings, recitals and language projects. The Russian Federation is multilingual, so the best programmes can celebrate Russian literature while also acknowledging the many other languages spoken by the country’s peoples.

The United Nations also observes Russian Language Day on June 6 as part of its multilingual-language programme. Pushkin’s influence on literary Russian explains the birthday choice, but the observance reaches beyond one author to translation, education, publishing and contemporary speech. Russian is the state language of the federation, while republics may establish their own state languages and many Indigenous and minority languages require support. The date is commemorative and educational, not a federal non-working holiday under Article 112.

How Russian Language Day is observed

A national language and literature observance on June 6, not a federal day off; schools and cultural institutions participate voluntarily.

Traditions of Russian Language Day

  • Pushkin readings

Libraries, schools and museums read Pushkin’s poetry and prose while placing his work within broader Russian-language literary history.

  • Translation and language events

Universities and cultural centres organise public translation workshops, dictations and discussions about usage, education and continuing linguistic change.

  • Multilingual context

Thoughtful programmes recognise the federation’s many other languages rather than presenting Russian-language culture as its only cultural voice.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Russian labour-law and official guidance. Annual substitute working days and local-service schedules should be confirmed against official notices.
