When is Nobel Laureate Day?

In 2026, Nobel Laureate Day falls on Friday, January 23, 2026. It is a Saint Lucian cultural or religious observance rather than a statutory public holiday, so workplace and school schedules usually continue.

History of Nobel Laureate Day

Nobel Laureate Day honours two Saint Lucians of exceptional international influence. Sir William Arthur Lewis received the 1979 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for pioneering research on development economics. Sir Derek Alton Walcott received the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature for a body of poetry and drama rooted in Caribbean history, language and landscape. Remarkably, both men were born on January 23, Lewis in 1915 and Walcott in 1930.

The observance began as Nobel Laureate Day in January 1993 after Walcott became the country’s second laureate. Government accounts explain that it grew into Nobel Laureate Week and then a festival extending across much of January. The expanded format allows institutions to study the laureates’ work rather than compress their legacies into a single ceremony. January 23 remains the symbolic centre because it is their shared birthday.

Programmes have included memorial lectures, poetry and theatre, student performances, book events, exhibitions, awards and wreath-laying at Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, where both laureates are interred. Themes and dates change annually. Nobel Laureate Day is culturally important but does not appear in the Bank Holidays Act, so it is not a general day off. Schools, colleges, libraries and cultural organisations announce their own participation.

How Nobel Laureate Day is observed

Nobel Laureate Day is a cultural observance, not a bank holiday. Lectures, literature, student performance and wreath-laying form part of a broader annual festival.

Traditions of Nobel Laureate Day

  • Wreath-laying at SALCC

A formal ceremony at Sir Arthur Lewis Community College honours Lewis and Walcott at the institution where both Nobel laureates are interred.

  • Lewis memorial lecture

Scholars revisit Sir Arthur Lewis’s development economics and ask how his ideas speak to contemporary Caribbean and global policy challenges.

  • Poetry and theatre

Readings, workshops and student performances engage Sir Derek Walcott’s poetry and drama while creating space for new Saint Lucian literary voices.

  • Celebrating excellence

Schools and cultural organisations use the festival to connect the laureates’ achievement with education, creativity, national pride and younger generations’ ambitions.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Saint Lucian cultural and heritage guidance. Saint Lucia’s Bank Holidays Act moves Sunday or coinciding bank holidays to the next non-holiday day; the annual government notice confirms practical dates.
