When is Day after New Year’s Day?

In 2026, Day after New Year’s Day falls on Friday, January 2, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Day after New Year’s Day

The Day after New Year’s Day is named separately in Samoa’s Public Holidays Act. It is therefore a holiday in its own right, not an observed-day label for January 1 and not merely a customary day off. The two-date arrangement gives families and communities more time after New Year services and gatherings and may ease return travel. Some households continue visiting, some attend church or village events, and others rest and prepare for work; none of these activities is legally prescribed.

The holiday also predates Samoa’s 2011 move west of the International Date Line. Skipping December 30 that year reduced the working-week mismatch with important trading partners, but it did not invent the January 2 holiday. The change means Samoa reaches the date earlier than many countries, while the public-holiday status still comes from domestic legislation and MCIL’s gazetted calendar.

The Day after New Year’s Day is expressly covered by Samoa’s official public-holiday framework. January 2 is its own legal date; it falls on Friday in 2026 and needs no substitute. Government offices close, and the Public Holidays Act generally closes schools and places of employment, but its rules are not a promise that every service stops. Shops may open, while hospitals, pharmacies, emergency response, police, transport, shipping, aviation, hospitality, communications and other listed services can continue. Section 39 of the Labour and Employment Relations Act governs employment rights: an eligible employee normally due to work receives the day off at ordinary pay; requested work attracts either double pay or ordinary pay plus a substituted working day under the statute. Current business and transport hours should therefore be checked directly.

How Day after New Year’s Day is observed

January 2 is a separate legal holiday. It falls on Friday in 2026, so no substitute date is listed.
