When is Father’s Day?
In 2026, Father’s Day falls on Monday, August 10, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Father’s Day
Father’s Day in Samoa combines a Sunday of family and church recognition with a statutory holiday on the following Monday. Congregations may acknowledge fathers through prayer, hymns, speeches or presentations, and households may arrange meals, visits or small gifts. Families can also honour grandfathers, uncles, guardians and others who undertake paternal care. These are common possibilities, not compulsory national rituals, and the experience varies with family structure, denomination, location, employment and connections with relatives overseas.
Father’s Day is observed within contemporary fa’a Samoa, a living framework of family, service, respect and communal responsibility rather than a fixed list of ceremonies. Church affiliation, village relationships, urban life, overseas family connections, finances and work schedules all affect what people do. Describing familiar practices can help visitors understand the day, but those practices should not be treated as compulsory or identical for every household. The legal holiday also applies regardless of a person’s faith or participation. MCIL publishes the gazetted calendar, and any election holiday or other exceptional date must be separately declared rather than assumed to recur.
Father’s Day is expressly covered by Samoa’s official public-holiday framework. The official Monday follows August’s second Sunday; in 2026 it is August 10. Government offices close, and the Public Holidays Act generally closes schools and places of employment, but its rules are not a promise that every service stops. Shops may open, while hospitals, pharmacies, emergency response, police, transport, shipping, aviation, hospitality, communications and other listed services can continue. Section 39 of the Labour and Employment Relations Act governs employment rights: an eligible employee normally due to work receives the day off at ordinary pay; requested work attracts either double pay or ordinary pay plus a substituted working day under the statute. Current business and transport hours should therefore be checked directly.
How Father’s Day is observed
The legal nationwide holiday follows August’s second Sunday; in 2026 it is Monday, August 10, as officially gazetted.
Traditions of Father’s Day
Recognition in church
Congregations may acknowledge fathers and caregivers through prayer, music, speeches or gifts, with the content determined locally by each church.
Family appreciation
Meals, visits, messages and practical help can express appreciation, while families choose arrangements suited to their relationships and available resources.
A Monday legal holiday
Sunday carries much of the social celebration, and Monday supplies the statutory work holiday subject to employment rules and service exemptions.
