When is Anniversary of the Arengo?
In 2026, Anniversary of the Arengo falls on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. It is classified here as a San Marino public holiday.
History of Anniversary of the Arengo
The Anniversary of the Arengo recalls March 25, 1906, when San Marino reconvened the historic assembly of family heads after centuries of oligarchic government. The medieval Arengo had exercised direct communal authority, but power gradually passed to representative councils and, by the seventeenth century, a small group of families perpetuated council membership through co-option. Reformers revived the assembly so citizens could decide whether the Great and General Council should continue renewing itself or become electorally accountable. The voters chose periodic popular election, transforming the republic’s modern democratic development.
Officially the date is also the Feast of the Militias, reflecting the ceremonial role of San Marino’s uniformed corps. The 1906 decision did not restore the Arengo as a permanent legislature; it opened the way to electoral rules and survives constitutionally through the Istanza d’Arengo. After each semiannual investiture, citizens may submit public-interest petitions to the Captains Regent for consideration by the Great and General Council. March 25 therefore links a historic democratic correction with living rights of petition rather than celebrating republican antiquity alone.
