When is Captains Regent Investiture?

In 2026, Captains Regent Investiture falls on Thursday, October 1, 2026. It is classified here as a San Marino public holiday.

History of Captains Regent Investiture

October 1 is the second annual investiture of San Marino’s Captains Regent, following the constitutional handover held on April 1. The Great and General Council elects two citizens to serve jointly as heads of state for six months, a short mandate designed to prevent durable concentration of authority. The October pair serves until the following April. Although the regency’s roots reach into San Marino’s medieval institutions, the office remains active and performs constitutional, representative and guarantor functions in the modern republic.

The ceremony follows an established route between Palazzo Valloni and the Public Palace and includes institutional authorities, diplomats, uniformed units and citizens watching in the historic centre. An official orator addresses the new regents and the assembled state, while the outgoing pair transfers responsibility publicly and peacefully. The first Sunday after investiture also provides for citizens to present Istanza d’Arengo petitions. October 1 is independently listed as a nationwide public holiday; it is not a repeated event hidden under the April date or moved to a convenient weekday.

How Captains Regent Investiture is observed
