When is Algiers Agreement Day?
In 2026, Algiers Agreement Day falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Algiers Agreement Day
Algiers Agreement Day commemorates the November 26, 1974 protocol signed in Algiers by Portugal and the MLSTP. The text recognised the people's right to self-determination and independence and established a transitional government, constituent assembly election, Portuguese troop withdrawal and July 12, 1975 independence date.
The agreement followed Portugal's April 1974 revolution and anti-colonial organising. It was a negotiated transfer between the Portuguese state and MLSTP leadership, not a multiparty referendum involving every political voice. Remembering that structure makes the date a useful companion to Independence Day without turning the diplomatic settlement into a claim of unanimous consent.
Algiers Agreement Day appears in the government's current annual holiday calendar but is not among the nine mandatory dates enumerated in article 185 of the Labour Code. Its practical closure follows the published public-service or employer calendar; article 185's Saturday/Sunday transfer wording should not be quoted as though the Code expressly assigns this date mandatory status. Essential services and some private operations can keep separate hours.
How Algiers Agreement Day is observed
Annual public holiday on Thursday, November 26, 2026; no automatic Friday bridge follows from the Labour Code's mandatory-holiday rule.
Traditions of Algiers Agreement Day
Household and community practice
People may read, discuss or teach the agreement and the sequence from negotiation to independence. Practice varies between São Tomé and Príncipe, between towns and rural districts, and by faith, family resources and personal choice.
Documented public observance
State institutions and media may stage speeches, archives, interviews or cultural programming about decolonisation. This is a documented form of observance, not a claim that every district follows one programme.
Planning the day
Confirm Friday opening hours separately because Thursday placement does not itself create a long weekend. Residents and travellers should verify the year's government, regional, transport and workplace notices.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official São Tomé and Príncipe official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in São Tomé and Príncipe may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
