When is Eid al-Fitr?
In 2026, Eid al-Fitr falls on Friday, March 20, 2026. It is classified here as a Saudi public holiday.
History of Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr in Saudi Arabia is the festival that closes Ramadan after a month of fasting, prayer, Qur'an recitation and charity. The first morning centres on Eid prayer and greetings before families begin rounds of visits, meals and hospitality. Because Makkah and Madinah receive worshippers from across the world, the transition from Ramadan to Eid also involves major transport, crowd-management and service arrangements beyond the domestic celebration.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development gives covered private-sector workers four paid days beginning on the day after 29 Ramadan under the Umm al-Qura calendar. That statutory period is not identical to every institutional closure. For 2026, SAMA schedules financial institutions from Tuesday, March 17 through Monday, March 23, while the RTGS system closes March 19β22. Because the calculated Eid first day is Friday, March 20, the four labour-law dates begin with 30 Ramadan on March 19 and run through March 22.
Annual official announcements remain decisive because lunar confirmation, operating needs and sectoral rules affect the practical timetable. Banks must maintain selected branches and payment services where necessary, and essential, airport and pilgrimage services continue on rosters. If statutory Eid leave overlaps a weekly rest day, MHRSD rules provide equivalent time before or after; overlap with annual or sick leave has separate treatment. Those employment rights should not be replaced by simply copying the longer public- or financial-sector shutdown.

Traditions of Eid al-Fitr
Eid prayer and greetings
Many Saudi families begin Eid al-Fitr with congregational prayer, exchange formal greetings and visit relatives, friends, elders and neighbours.
Saudi hospitality
Arabic coffee, dates, sweets and shared meals make visiting central to the holiday, with dishes and serving customs varying across regions.
Eid al-Fitr observance
For Eid al-Fitr in Saudi Arabia, prayer, hospitality and giving follow the religious purpose of this particular festival. Religious and official announcements also shape the date and practical arrangements for the community.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Saudi official and legal guidance. Lunar dates and annual government, employer or local-service schedules should be confirmed against official notices.
