When is Whit Monday?
In 2026, Whit Monday falls on Monday, May 25, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Whit Monday
Whit Monday in Senegal follows Pentecost Sunday, the Christian feast of the Holy Spirit, and is one of the moving legal holidays named in Law 74-52. It falls fifty days after Western Easter Sunday, on May 25 in 2026. The statutory Monday is distinct from Pentecost Sunday even though religious programmes span the whole weekend.
For Senegalese Catholics, Pentecost weekend is closely associated with the national Marian pilgrimage to Popenguine, whose origins date to 1888 and whose organised walking pilgrimage developed much later. APS reported nearly 24,000 registered walkers expected for the 138th edition in 2026, with Mass, rosary and popular devotion. This is a major Catholic gathering, not a practice shared by all Christians or all residents.
Whit Monday is a legal, nonworking holiday under Law 74-52. The base act expressly makes April 4, May 1, the day after Tamkharit and the Grand Magal paid; it does not by itself give every other holiday the same paid status, although collective agreements and sector rules can be more favourable. Decree 74-1125 allows necessary continuous services to operate and confirms that neither a Sunday placement nor the day before or after creates a substitute or bridge without specific legal authority.
How Whit Monday is observed
Legal holiday on Monday, May 25, 2026; the Popenguine pilgrimage follows its own multi-day programme and logistics. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in Senegal should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.
Traditions of Whit Monday
Household and community practice
Catholic pilgrims may walk in organised groups to Popenguine, pray at the shrine and reunite with parish communities; many others celebrate in their home parishes. Participation, food, language and devotional practice differ among regions, religious communities, brotherhoods and households.
Organised observance
The pilgrimage programme includes Mass, rosary, music, lodging, water and crowd-management arrangements coordinated for each edition. The responsible organisers publish the actual programme, venue and access arrangements for each edition.
Planning the holiday
Book transport and accommodation early if travelling to Popenguine, while recognising that the rest of Senegal does not follow the pilgrimage timetable. Residents and visitors should check current government, transport, school, congregation and workplace notices rather than assume every service closes.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Senegal official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Senegal may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
