When is Corpus Christi?

In 2026, Corpus Christi falls on Thursday, June 4, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi, called Fête Dieu in the statute, is the Catholic solemnity of the body and blood of Christ and focuses on belief in the Eucharist. French Catholic mission history helped establish the feast in Seychelles' public calendar, while Anglican, other Christian and non-Christian residents do not necessarily observe its doctrine.

A Victoria procession led by the apostolic vicar in 1881 documents the feast's local depth, but present practice is set parish by parish rather than by a single permanent national route. The date is sixty days after Western Easter Sunday and falls on Thursday, June 4 in 2026.

The Public Holidays Act makes scheduled and specially ordered dates closed holidays in courts, government offices and banks and legal holidays throughout Seychelles. Section 4 adds the next day that is not already a public holiday only when a named holiday falls on Sunday; there is no automatic Saturday substitute. Tourism, transport, health and other necessary services may continue, and employees should apply current employment regulations and any more favourable agreement to holiday work.

How Corpus Christi is observed

Nationwide legal holiday on Thursday, June 4, 2026, sixty days after Western Easter Sunday. Religious participation is principally Catholic.

Traditions of Corpus Christi

  • Mass for the Eucharist

Catholic parishes celebrate Fête Dieu with Mass centred on the Eucharist; the feast is not a doctrine shared in the same form by all Christians.

  • Procession where arranged

Victoria has a documented history of Corpus Christi processions, while each parish determines whether and where a procession occurs today.

  • Reverent route preparation

When a procession is announced, parishioners may prepare music, banners, flowers or stopping places and follow published traffic arrangements.
