When is Easter Monday?

In 2026, Easter Monday falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Easter Monday

Easter Monday continues the Christian Easter season after Sunday's celebration of the resurrection. It gives congregations and households time for fellowship and travel, while its nationwide legal status also covers residents who do not participate in Christian worship.

Easter Monday was added to the statutory calendar in 2017 when Liberation Day on June 5 was removed. The exchange reflects changing public commemoration rather than a claim that Monday is more important religiously than Easter Sunday; in 2026 it falls on April 6.

The Public Holidays Act makes scheduled and specially ordered dates closed holidays in courts, government offices and banks and legal holidays throughout Seychelles. Section 4 adds the next day that is not already a public holiday only when a named holiday falls on Sunday; there is no automatic Saturday substitute. Tourism, transport, health and other necessary services may continue, and employees should apply current employment regulations and any more favourable agreement to holiday work.

How Easter Monday is observed

Nationwide legal holiday on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is a named holiday introduced in 2017, not compensation for Easter Sunday.

Traditions of Easter Monday

  • Continued family time

Families may continue Easter meals and visits after the principal Sunday worship, without a prescribed national programme. Church services, prayer and music give the day its religious centre, with the form of worship reflecting local denominations and community practice.

  • Church fellowship

Some congregations organise choir, youth or fellowship activities as Holy Week programmes conclude. Relatives and friends may share meals or visit one another, especially when the date forms part of a longer public-holiday period.

  • Return journeys

The Monday is used for travel back from another island or district before ordinary work resumes, subject to ferry and flight timetables.
