When is Cyril and Methodius Day?

In 2026, Cyril and Methodius Day falls on Sunday, July 5, 2026. It is classified here as a Slovak public holiday.

History of Cyril and Methodius Day

Saints Cyril and Methodius arrived in Great Moravia in 863 at the invitation of Prince Rastislav. Their mission used the local Slavic language in worship and learning, and the alphabet associated with Cyril created a foundation for Slavic literary culture. Although the medieval political map was different from today’s, Great Moravia is central to Slovak historical memory.

The July 5 holiday joins religious devotion with the history of language, education and cultural continuity. Pilgrimages and services are especially visible at Nitra, an important early Christian centre. As a statutory day off in high summer, it also gives families a chance to connect a major national story with local festivals, visits and travel.

Saints Cyril and Methodius Day is a nationwide day of rest under the current Act No. 241/1993, whether classified there as a state holiday or as another holiday day of rest. Slovakia does not transfer a holiday to Monday merely because its calendar date falls on Saturday or Sunday. Since the November 2025 consolidation, this date is not among the small group carrying a general employee retail-sales prohibition, so shops may open even though the holiday remains a day of rest for ordinary labour-law purposes. Continuous operations, health services, transport and other legally permitted work can still run, so a day of rest should not be described as a complete national shutdown.
