When is Slovak Republic Day?
In 2026, Slovak Republic Day falls on Thursday, January 1, 2026. It is classified here as a Slovak public holiday.
History of Slovak Republic Day
The Slovak Republic came into being on 1 January 1993, when Czechoslovakia dissolved peacefully into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The decision followed the political changes after 1989 and negotiations between Slovak and Czech representatives in the early 1990s. January 1 therefore has a double meaning in Slovakia: it opens the calendar year and marks the beginning of the modern state.
The anniversary is a statutory day off and is usually quiet after New Year’s Eve. Official statements and flag displays give it its civic character, while family visits, winter walks and the continuation of New Year celebrations give the day a more personal rhythm. It is a reminder that statehood can be built through constitutional and democratic change rather than a single dramatic military event.
Day of the Establishment of the Slovak Republic is a nationwide day of rest under the current Act No. 241/1993, whether classified there as a state holiday or as another holiday day of rest. Slovakia does not transfer a holiday to Monday merely because its calendar date falls on Saturday or Sunday. The current Labour Code also generally prohibits assigning employees to retail sales on this date, subject to narrow statutory exceptions; on December 24 that retail restriction begins at noon. Continuous operations, health services, transport and other legally permitted work can still run, so a day of rest should not be described as a complete national shutdown.
How Slovak Republic Day is observed
