When is Easter Monday?

In 2026, Easter Monday falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a Slovak public holiday.

History of Easter Monday

Easter Monday continues the Christian celebration of the Resurrection, but in Slovakia it is also known for vigorous folk customs that predate modern urban life. Regional practices include šibačka, a light symbolic switching with decorated willow twigs, and polievačka, the sprinkling of water. Their older language is one of health, freshness and spring renewal, though families now adapt them in many different ways.

The date is a statutory day off and one of the best examples of how religious and folk traditions can share the same calendar space. Some households attend church or exchange Easter food; others focus on visits, painted eggs and spring outings. The customs are not a script that every Slovak follows, and modern celebrations often put consent, humour and family preference first.

Easter Monday in Slovakia is a nationwide day of rest under the current Act No. 241/1993, whether classified there as a state holiday or as another holiday day of rest. Slovakia does not transfer a holiday to Monday merely because its calendar date falls on Saturday or Sunday. Since the November 2025 consolidation, this date is not among the small group carrying a general employee retail-sales prohibition, so shops may open even though the holiday remains a day of rest for ordinary labour-law purposes. Continuous operations, health services, transport and other legally permitted work can still run, so a day of rest should not be described as a complete national shutdown.

How Easter Monday is observed
