When is National Flag Day?
In 2026, National Flag Day falls on Monday, October 12, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of National Flag Day
Somali National Flag Day on October 12 recalls the adoption and first raising of the light-blue flag with its white five-pointed star in 1954, during the UN trusteeship period. Mohamed Awale Liban designed it, and Somali Youth League figures promoted it despite initial objections from the Italian administration.
The star's five points historically represented Somali-populated territories across the Horn, an aspiration central to mid-twentieth-century nationalism. Today the flag is the constitutional emblem of the Federal Republic; explaining the older symbolism is historical context, not a claim against neighbouring states. Somaliland uses a different flag and does not include October 12 in its statutory holiday list.
Villa Somalia lists October 12 as a federal national holiday. Federal civil-service rest rules apply when the government recognises the date, but the reviewed sources do not establish a blanket paid private-sector closure. In 2026 it falls on Monday, so no Friday-rest substitution issue arises.
This is a Federal Republic calendar entry. Federal rules and announcements do not prove identical implementation by every federal member state, private employer or territory under Somaliland's separate administration. Public gatherings and service availability can also change with local security conditions.
How National Flag Day is observed

Traditions of National Flag Day
Household and community practice
Residents and institutions may display the light-blue flag, wear blue and white, or discuss what the symbol has meant across generations. Practice varies by family resources, locality, religious outlook and displacement or diaspora circumstances.
Organised observance
Schools, officials and media may present flag raisings, historical lessons, poetry or patriotic music under locally announced programmes. Organisers and local authorities set the programme, access rules and security arrangements for each place and year.
Practical planning
Use the constitutionally specified flag and verify whether a particular school, business or state office closes for the commemoration. Check current federal, state, Somaliland, municipal, congregation and employer notices instead of assuming a uniform national shutdown.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Somalia official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Somalia may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
