When is Adhi Poson Poya?

In 2026, Adhi Poson Poya falls on Saturday, May 30, 2026. It is classified here as a Sri Lankan public holiday.

History of Adhi Poson Poya

The 2026 Sri Lankan calendar lists Adhi Poson Full Moon Poya Day in addition to Poson Poya. “Adhi” identifies an intercalary occurrence in the traditional lunisolar reckoning rather than a second fixed Gregorian festival. Its inclusion demonstrates why Sri Lanka publishes an approved Poya calendar each year: thirteen full moons occur within the 2026 civil year, and their religious month names cannot be generated reliably from a simple month-by-month template.

For 2026, the government separately scheduled State Vesak Week from May 27 to June 2, centring its principal programme on May 30. That ceremonial decision did not rename the legal calendar entry: the approved calendar and Gazette continue to identify May 30 as Adhi Poson Full Moon Poya Day, while May 1 remains Vesak and May 2 the Day Following Vesak. This guide preserves that distinction and does not project Adhi Poson into later years without a new annual calendar.

Adhi Poson Full Moon Poya Day is legally a public and bank holiday under Sri Lanka's approved annual calendar. The 2026 date is May 30; outside 2026, the lunar estimate on this site remains provisional until the Minister's calendar and any Gazette variation are published. Shop and office employees are entitled to a Full Moon Poya holiday, but the governing Act does not create an extra day in lieu when Poya coincides with a weekly holiday or another statutory holiday. Banks close, government services reduce, and tourism or essential services may continue with lawful staffing. Licensed alcohol sales are restricted on Poya days, while local rules also affect meat sales and entertainment; visitors should follow current notices rather than assume every business closes.

How Adhi Poson Poya is observed

A nationwide public and bank holiday in the approved 2026 calendar only; consult the next annual Gazette for later years. The Ministry’s annual Gazette and calendar are controlling. The civil date shown outside 2026 is a planning estimate, not a substitute for the published holiday notice.
