When is Ill Poya?
In 2026, Ill Poya falls on Tuesday, November 24, 2026. It is classified here as a Sri Lankan public holiday.
History of Ill Poya
Ill Full Moon Poya Day is associated in Theravada tradition with the Buddha sending the first sixty arahants in different directions to teach the Dhamma after the early rains retreat. Sri Lankan accounts also connect the month with the conclusion of the annual Kathina robe-offering season and traditions concerning the future Buddha Metteyya. These themes concern the spread and continuity of Buddhist teaching, not a mission led by Sariputta and Moggallana as some simplified summaries incorrectly claim.
The observance is generally temple-centred rather than spectacle-centred. Devotees offer flowers and lamps, listen to Dhamma sermons, observe sil or support the closing Kathina programmes of local monasteries. Individual temples decide their schedule, and not every historical association is enacted as a separate public ritual. Like all Poya holidays, Ill's civil date is controlled by Sri Lanka's annually approved full-moon calendar.
Ill Full Moon Poya Day is legally a public and bank holiday under Sri Lanka's approved annual calendar. The 2026 date is November 24; outside 2026, the lunar estimate on this site remains provisional until the Minister's calendar and any Gazette variation are published. Shop and office employees are entitled to a Full Moon Poya holiday, but the governing Act does not create an extra day in lieu when Poya coincides with a weekly holiday or another statutory holiday. Banks close, government services reduce, and tourism or essential services may continue with lawful staffing. Licensed alcohol sales are restricted on Poya days, while local rules also affect meat sales and entertainment; visitors should follow current notices rather than assume every business closes.
How Ill Poya is observed
A nationwide public and bank holiday on the Ill full moon. The Ministry’s annual Gazette and calendar are controlling. The civil date shown outside 2026 is a planning estimate, not a substitute for the published holiday notice.
Traditions of Ill Poya

Ill Poya brings devotees to Sri Lankan temples for flower and lamp offerings, sermons, meditation and observance of the Eight Precepts.
A restrained public day
Ill is a public and bank holiday when licensed alcohol sales stop and many entertainment venues adopt quieter operating arrangements.
Dana and reflection
Families marking Ill may offer food to monastics, support temple programmes and reserve time for religious learning, rest and reflection.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Sri Lankan official and legal guidance. Poya and lunar dates, annual Gazette notices and employer schedules should be confirmed against official notices.
