When is Nikini Poya?
In 2026, Nikini Poya falls on Thursday, August 27, 2026. It is classified here as a Sri Lankan public holiday.
History of Nikini Poya
Nikini Full Moon Poya Day is associated with early Buddhist monastic history, including the first Buddhist council in Sri Lankan tradition. It arrives in the middle of the year’s long sequence of Poya observances, after the major Poson and Esala seasons, and brings a comparatively contemplative public holiday.
Families and devotees may attend temple, make offerings or spend the day observing sil. The national closure is straightforward, but the day’s religious life is local: temples determine their own sermons, meditation sessions and community arrangements. Its date is set by the full moon and formally confirmed each year.
Nikini Full Moon Poya Day is legally a public and bank holiday under Sri Lanka's approved annual calendar. The 2026 date is August 27; outside 2026, the lunar estimate on this site remains provisional until the Minister's calendar and any Gazette variation are published. Shop and office employees are entitled to a Full Moon Poya holiday, but the governing Act does not create an extra day in lieu when Poya coincides with a weekly holiday or another statutory holiday. Banks close, government services reduce, and tourism or essential services may continue with lawful staffing. Licensed alcohol sales are restricted on Poya days, while local rules also affect meat sales and entertainment; visitors should follow current notices rather than assume every business closes.
How Nikini Poya is observed
