When is Whit Monday?
In 2026, Whit Monday falls on Monday, May 25, 2026. It is a Vincentian public holiday. Government offices and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.
History of Whit Monday
Whit Monday follows Pentecost, also called Whitsunday, the Christian feast recalling the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Jesus’s disciples as told in Acts 2. Pentecost is celebrated on the fiftieth day of the Easter season. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ official calendar preserves the following Monday as a nationwide public holiday, so its date moves between May and June.
The holiday reflects the strong historical place of Christianity in Caribbean public calendars, including traditions inherited through British colonial administration and reshaped by local churches. Vincentian congregations are diverse: Anglican, Methodist, Roman Catholic, Spiritual Baptist, Pentecostal and other communities do not necessarily use the same liturgy or place equal emphasis on Whit Monday itself. Pentecost worship generally belongs to the preceding Sunday.
For the wider public, the Monday creates a long weekend near the transition into the country’s summer festival season. Churches may arrange fellowship, conferences or youth events, while households visit relatives, go to beaches or simply rest. These are common possibilities rather than prescribed national rites. Public offices close, but transport and tourism services across Saint Vincent and the Grenadines publish their own schedules for the movable date.
How Whit Monday is observed
A nationwide movable public holiday fifty days after Easter Sunday. Pentecost worship usually occurs on Sunday; Monday church, transport and business schedules vary locally.
Traditions of Whit Monday
Pentecost worship
On the preceding Sunday, churches read the Acts narrative and emphasise the Holy Spirit, mission and the multilingual birth of the church.
Congregational fellowship
Some Vincentian churches arrange meals, youth meetings, music or community activities that take advantage of the extended Pentecost weekend.
Long-weekend leisure
Families may visit, picnic or spend time by the sea, while inter-island travellers confirm ferries and other holiday services beforehand.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Saint Vincent and the Grenadines public-holiday calendar. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines publishes an annual holiday notice; weekend arrangements and Carnival dates should be confirmed there.
