When is Holy Saturday?

In 2026, Holy Saturday falls on Saturday, April 4, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of Holy Saturday

Holy Saturday, Påskafton, is the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. In Christian chronology it is a day of waiting before the celebration of the Resurrection, and some Swedish churches hold an Easter Vigil that begins in darkness and introduces the Easter light. Domestic custom has developed differently: as with Christmas and Midsummer, Swedish households commonly begin the feast on the preceding eve-day, making Saturday the main occasion for the Easter table, eggs and sweets.

The modern påskbord may include eggs, pickled herring, salmon, potatoes, lamb and dishes familiar from the smörgåsbord tradition. Påskris—birch twigs decorated with feathers, eggs or paper ornaments—brings spring colour indoors. Regional custom also affects the påskkärringar: children often dress as Easter witches and exchange drawings or greetings for sweets on Maundy Thursday, while Holy Saturday has historically been more usual in parts of western Sweden.

Holy Saturday is not separately named in Sweden’s Public Holidays Act. It is a Saturday and is included among ‘public holidays and equivalent to public holidays’ in the Government Offices’ 2026 diplomatic calendar, but that wording must not be converted into a universal statutory day-off entitlement. Retail, transport and hospitality schedules vary, and employment rights follow the ordinary Saturday rules plus any collective agreement. The movable date is always one day before Western Easter Sunday.

How Holy Saturday is observed

A major movable Easter observance on Saturday, not a separately designated public holiday. Opening hours and employee arrangements follow Saturday schedules and applicable agreements.

Traditions of Holy Saturday

  • The påskbord

Families commonly serve eggs, herring, salmon, potatoes and other smörgåsbord-style dishes at the principal Swedish Easter meal on Saturday.

  • Påskris and decorated eggs

Birch twigs with feathers or ornaments, painted eggs and candy-filled paper eggs bring vivid spring colour into Swedish homes.

  • Regional Easter witches

In parts of western Sweden, children may dress as påskkärringar and exchange drawings or greetings for sweets on Holy Saturday.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Swedish government and labour-law guidance. Employer, school and local-service schedules can differ from the statutory public-holiday calendar.
