When is Asarnha Bucha?

In 2026, Asarnha Bucha falls on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. It is classified here as a Thai public holiday.

History of Asarnha Bucha

Asarnha Bucha Day in Thailand, also romanised Asalha Bucha, falls on the full moon of the eighth Thai lunar month. Theravada tradition remembers the Buddha’s first sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, to five ascetics at the Deer Park in Sarnath. Kondanna’s attainment is understood as the beginning of the community of disciples, so the day honours the first teaching of Dhamma and the arising of the Sangha.

Thai Buddhists may visit temples, give alms, keep precepts, hear sermons and join evening wian thian. Teaching often focuses on the Middle Way and Four Noble Truths. Asarnha Bucha immediately precedes Khao Phansa, but they are not the same holiday: one remembers the first sermon on the full moon; the next marks the beginning of the monastic rains retreat.

The 2026 government and Bank of Thailand calendars set Asarnha Bucha on Wednesday, July 29. Government offices and scheduled financial institutions close. Private employers may select it for their traditional-holiday list, while retail, tourism, transport and medical services can use holiday rosters. The lunar civil date must be confirmed annually and should not be projected from 2026.
