When is National Flag Day?
In 2026, National Flag Day falls on Thursday, October 22, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of National Flag Day
In July 2016 the General Fono agreed that October 22 would be a public holiday celebrating Tokelau’s flag. Its published decision says the date was added to the six holidays then in place for national services, producing seven national public-service holidays, alongside six village holidays. That wording matters: Flag Day has a clear official basis, but its administrative scope should not be restated as a universal private-employment rule without further authority.
Tokelau’s General Fono approved the flag design in 2008 together with the tuluma national symbol. Royal licence followed in August 2009, and the Governor-General presented the first official flag in September 2009. The flag was formally launched at the October 2009 General Fono in Fakaofo. Its blue field, yellow sailing canoe and Southern Cross refer to ocean, navigation, collective journey and community aspirations as explained by the Government of Tokelau.
National Flag Day was first celebrated on October 22, 2016. Tokelau’s UN-observed referendums in 2006 and 2007 did not reach the required two-thirds support for self-government in free association, so its present status continued; self-determination remains an ongoing conversation. Climate impacts and mobility links with New Zealand are important contemporary issues, but they do not make displacement inevitable or erase present community life. In 2026 October 22 falls on Thursday.
