When is Eid al-Fitr?
In 2026, Eid al-Fitr falls on Friday, March 20, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr in Tunisia, often called Eid Esseghir, begins on 1 Shawwal and ends Ramadan's month of fasting. Its religious core includes the morning Eid prayer and zakat al-fitr given before prayer so people in need can take part. The Gregorian date is not fixed: Tunisian authorities announce it after the national lunar-confirmation process.
The feast combines worship with visiting and strongly regional food traditions. Children often receive new clothes or small gifts, while hosts offer pastries and coffee. Nabeul reporting documents its own preparations and customs; Sfax, Tunis, Kairouan and other communities should not be described as if they serve the same sweets or follow one timetable.
Decree No. 2021-223 grants public employees three days for Eid al-Fitr. The Presidency of the Government confirmed March 20, 21 and 22 in 2026 and resumption of normal winter hours on Monday, March 23. Presidential Decree No. 2021-223 grants holiday leave to personnel of the State, local authorities and administrative public institutions; its wording is not a blanket rule for every private workplace. Labour Code articles 107-110 provide that paid non-working holidays in private employment are fixed by decree or collective agreements, protect covered pay and add an equal indemnity where an employee in a non-stoppable activity works the holiday. Employees must therefore check the rule or collective agreement governing their sector. Neither cited text creates a general next-working-day substitute when a holiday falls on Saturday or Sunday.
How Eid al-Fitr is observed
First day on Friday, March 20, 2026, followed by two additional public-sector leave days. Later years remain unset until official lunar confirmation.
Traditions of Eid al-Fitr
Household and community practice
Muslims may attend morning prayer, give zakat al-fitr, exchange 'Eid mabrouk' greetings and visit relatives. Children can receive clothing, sweets or money according to family means.
Public or religious programme
Bakeries and households prepare locally favoured pastries before the feast, while mosques announce prayer arrangements. Recipes and visiting sequences vary markedly between regions and families.
Planning the holiday
Confirm the Mufti and government announcement before booking future travel. In 2026 the overlap with Independence Day can change traffic and public programming without creating an additional leave day.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Tunisia official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Tunisia may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
