When is Novruz · Day 1?
In 2026, Novruz · Day 1 falls on Saturday, March 21, 2026. It is classified here as a Turkmen public holiday.
History of Novruz · Day 1
Novruz arrives around the spring equinox and is one of the oldest shared seasonal festivals in Central Asia and the wider Persianate world. Turkmenistan’s Labour Code gives March 21 and 22 public-holiday status, recognising a celebration associated with the awakening of nature, renewal and good neighbourliness.
Its place in Turkmen life reaches beyond a single ceremony. Homes and public spaces are prepared for spring, families visit, and large official festivities bring together music, traditional food, games and crafts. UNESCO lists Novruz as intangible cultural heritage, a useful reminder that the festival belongs to a living regional tradition while retaining distinctive local forms in Turkmenistan.
The two-day legal structure is important. March 21 and March 22 are both named in Article 81, rather than the second date being an optional cultural extension. In 2026 the second day fell on Sunday, so the presidential decree moved that rest day to Monday March 23 for institutions, enterprises and organisations regardless of ownership. Day 2 remains a calendar occurrence but is consolidated into this main guide to avoid duplicate editorial pages.
