When is Tuvalu Day?

In 2026, Tuvalu Day falls on Thursday, October 1, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Tuvalu Day

Tuvalu Day begins the country’s two-day national holiday on October 1. The first date marks Tuvalu’s independence from the United Kingdom on October 1, 1978, after the former Ellice Islands separated from the Gilbert Islands administration. The Public Holidays Act lists both October 1 and October 2, so the second day is part of the statutory national period rather than an informal extension.

The political process included Tuvaluan support for separation and the development of separate institutions before independence. Tuvalu is now a sovereign constitutional monarchy with an elected Parliament and island constituencies. Independence should be described as Tuvaluan self-determination, while recognising that Indigenous community, language and governance long pre-date both colonial administration and the creation of the modern state.

Climate change, coastal hazards and migration are serious contemporary policy issues, but they do not redefine the meaning of the 1978 anniversary or justify language suggesting that Tuvalu has already disappeared. In 2026 October 1 falls on Thursday and October 2 on Friday, so no substitute is needed. Public offices close under the Act, while departments, private workplaces and necessary services communicate operational arrangements.
