When is Gospel Day?

In 2026, Gospel Day falls on Monday, May 11, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Gospel Day

Gospel Day, named Te Aso o te Tala Lei in the Public Holidays Act, is held on the Monday following the second Sunday in May. The correct 2026 date is May 11. The holiday recalls the establishment and growth of Christianity in the islands; material preserved through the Tuvalu National Archives documents a 1961 centenary of the Gospel’s arrival in the former Ellice Islands in 1861.

Church history is important to many Tuvaluans, but it includes encounters between Pacific Island communities as well as later colonial administration. Accounts often connect the 1861 arrival with Elekana, a Christian deacon from Manihiki who reached Nukulaelae after being carried off course. That story should be presented as documented church history, not as a claim that Tuvalu lacked established societies, values or spiritual traditions before Christianity.

The national Monday holiday is distinct from any island-level church anniversary or local program. Section 6 of the Act allows a Minister to appoint an additional holiday for a particular island or district, which explains why local dates should not automatically be added to the national calendar. Public offices observe the national date, while congregations, employers and necessary services organise their own activities within applicable law.

Traditions of Gospel Day

  • Island and family plans

Families and island communities may use Gospel Day for church services, singing, historical reflection, meals and gatherings shaped by each congregation and island, with practice varying among households, congregations and islands.

  • Confirm public notices

Government offices, employers, schools and travelers check current notices for Gospel Day, because the Minister can appoint or move certain public holidays.

  • Necessary services

Public departments and necessary services may operate during Gospel Day under applicable rules, so transport, health care and opening hours should be confirmed locally.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Tuvalu official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Tuvalu may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
