When is Easter Monday?
In 2026, Easter Monday falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Easter Monday
Easter Monday extends the Western Christian Easter observance after the celebration of Jesus's resurrection on Sunday. In Uganda it is legally distinct from Easter Sunday: Monday is named in Schedule 2, while Sunday is already a common weekly rest and worship day. The moving calculation places Easter Monday on April 6 in 2026.
After intensive Holy Week and Easter worship, congregations and households may use Monday for visits, meals, youth activities or the journey home. Religious participation varies across Christian denominations, and non-Christian residents encounter the day mainly through closure and family time. Treating those experiences separately avoids presenting majority practice as universal belief.
Easter Monday is expressly listed in Schedule 2 of Uganda's Public Holidays Act and is therefore a nationwide public holiday. The Act contains no rule moving a Saturday or Sunday holiday to Monday: the calendar date remains the legal holiday unless the President separately declares another day under section 2(2). Covered employees receive ordinary full remuneration; holiday work attracts additional pay or paid leave in lieu under the Public Holidays Act and Employment Act, subject to those Acts' conditions.
How Easter Monday is observed
