When is All Saints’ Day?
In 2026, All Saints’ Day falls on Sunday, November 1, 2026. It is classified here as a Vatican City public holiday.
History of All Saints’ Day
All Saints’ Day belongs to Vatican City's unusually dense religious and institutional calendar. The sovereign territory is the seat of the Pope and the operational home of the Governorate, while the Holy See serves the worldwide Catholic Church. A feast can consequently be a canonical holy day, a liturgical observance with papal ceremonies, an employee vacation day, or several of these at once. Those distinctions matter: a celebration in Saint Peter's Basilica does not by itself determine whether museums, offices, security services or diplomatic bodies close.
The solemnity honours the communion of saints, known and unknown. It is a Catholic holy day of obligation and opens the Vatican’s early-November sequence of reflection on sanctity, death and remembrance. The meaning is made visible through the Roman Rite celebrated at the Vatican, but the exact papal programme is set year by year. The Prefecture of the Papal Household and the Office for Liturgical Celebrations announce public Masses, blessings and audiences, while access may require a ticket or pass through security. Pilgrims should consult those notices rather than assume that a recurring feast always produces the same ceremony, celebrant or venue.
All Saints’ Day also needs a precise administrative label. Article 27 of the Governorate's personnel regulation gives Vatican City State employees vacation on the listed additional days and incorporates Sundays and the holy days named by canon law; it is not a statute promising identical opening hours across every Holy See body. Essential, liturgical, security and visitor services may continue. Article 26 provides compensatory weekday rest when an employee must work on Sunday, but the regulation does not establish automatic Monday substitution whenever a feast falls at a weekend. The Vatican Museums, Saint Peter's Basilica, post office, pharmacies and papal events therefore publish their own operational notices.
How All Saints’ Day is observed
A Vatican City holiday and holy day of obligation on November 1. No automatic weekday substitute follows merely because the date falls on Saturday or Sunday; operating institutions publish separate schedules.
Traditions of All Saints’ Day
Liturgical celebration
Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours and the Roman calendar place the communion of saints and prayerful remembrance at the centre of worship in Vatican basilicas and chapels.
Pilgrim participation
Pilgrims gather in or around Saint Peter's Basilica and Square when the Holy See schedules a papal Mass, Angelus, audience or blessing.
Published Vatican programme
Clergy, residents and visitors follow the Holy See's annual notices because the celebrant, venue, admission arrangements and security perimeter can change.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Holy See and Vatican City official guidance. The Vatican City personnel calendar and papal liturgical programme can differ from the wider Italian calendar.
