When is September Revolution Day?

In 2026, September Revolution Day falls on Saturday, September 26, 2026. It is classified here as a Yemeni public holiday.

History of September Revolution Day

September Revolution Day commemorates the revolution of September 26, 1962, which overthrew the Mutawakkilite Kingdom and led to the creation of the Yemen Arab Republic in North Yemen. It is a fixed national holiday under the public-holiday law and remains a key date in the country’s modern political history.

The anniversary is often described through the ideals associated with the revolution, including republican government, national independence and social progress. Commemorations can take the form of official speeches, flags and local civic events, while the public holiday also gives families an opportunity to spend time together.

The 1962 revolution led to an eight-year civil war involving Yemeni royalist and republican forces and significant Egyptian and Saudi intervention; reducing that history to a single triumphalist slogan would omit its human and regional complexity. September 26 remains named in Law No. 2, but contemporary public meaning is contested. The Sana’a Center records that political actors use national anniversaries for rival narratives and that September 26 gatherings have at times met restrictions in areas under Houthi de facto authority. Current local access and closure notices therefore matter.

How September Revolution Day is observed

A statutory paid holiday on September 26, but ceremonies, access and actual closures vary across Yemen’s competing authorities, employers and essential services.
