When is Kenneth Kaunda Day?
In 2026, Kenneth Kaunda Day falls on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Kenneth Kaunda Day
Kenneth Kaunda Day marks the April 28, 1924 birthday of Kenneth David Kaunda, a teacher, nationalist leader and Zambia’s first president from independence in 1964 until 1991. He helped lead resistance to the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland and supported liberation movements elsewhere in southern Africa. The holiday was created by Statutory Instrument 69 of 2021 after his death, rather than dating from his presidency.
Kaunda’s record should not be reduced to official praise. His government expanded education and health and made Zambia a base for anticolonial movements, but the 1972 Constitution established a one-party system under UNIP, and copper dependence and economic crisis marked later decades. Multiparty politics returned in 1991, when Kaunda lost the election and transferred power. The holiday invites assessment of that whole career, not endorsement of every policy.
Kenneth Kaunda Day is observed nationwide through statutory or annual public-holiday declarations made under the Public Holidays Act, rather than through the older consolidated Schedule alone. Official annual Gazette practice has also listed following-Monday holidays when recurring declared dates fall on Sunday. The 2026 proposal to abolish the Sunday rule was withdrawn, while pay and holiday-work terms remain subject to the Employment Code and applicable instruments.
How Kenneth Kaunda Day is observed

Traditions of Kenneth Kaunda Day
Community practice
People may visit memorial sites, discuss Kaunda’s humanism and regional liberation role, or examine the achievements and failures of his presidency. Practice differs among provinces, language communities, churches, organisations and households, so no one programme represents all Zambians.
Verified programme
Centenary practice documented public lectures, exhibitions, service projects, community cleaning and donations rather than only ceremonial speeches. Organisers publish the actual venue, theme, timing and participation arrangements for each annual observance.
Planning the day
Museums, councils and schools set their own programmes, while residents should distinguish historical remembrance from partisan endorsement. Essential, health, security, hospitality and transport services may operate to separate rosters despite public-office closures.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Zambia official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Zambia may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
