When is Easter Monday?
In 2026, Easter Monday falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Easter Monday
Easter Monday in Zimbabwe is the public holiday immediately after Easter Sunday. It extends the festival beyond its principal Sunday and completes a continuous Friday-to-Monday statutory break. The Monday is independently named in the Act; it is not merely a substitute created whenever Easter Sunday occurs.
Religious intensity often eases as conferences conclude and travellers return home, although some congregations continue fellowship or closing services. The day’s practical importance is therefore as much about dispersal, family time and rest as worship. The long weekend also brings heavier road use and recurring safety messages.
Easter Monday is April 6 in 2026. It is also the Monday following gazetted Easter Sunday, but the Act does not extend that overlap to Tuesday. Labour Act section 14C gives covered employees paid leave when the holiday falls on a day they would otherwise work; an employee who consents to work must receive at least twice current remuneration. Rostered services can remain open.
How Easter Monday is observed
Nationwide public holiday on Monday, April 6, 2026; ordinary schedules generally resume Tuesday. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in Zimbabwe should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.
Traditions of Easter Monday
Conference closing
Church gatherings may end with final prayers, announcements and departure; times vary by congregation. Church services, prayer and music give the day its religious centre, with the form of worship reflecting local denominations and community practice.
Return journeys
Travellers head back from homes and pilgrimage sites, making transport availability and road conditions important. Relatives and friends may share meals or visit one another, especially when the date forms part of a longer public-holiday period.
Family rest
Households use the final holiday for leftovers, visiting or recovery before work and school resume. Travel, markets and public events follow local patterns, while opening hours depend on the holiday’s legal scope and current official guidance.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Zimbabwe official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Zimbabwe may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
