When is Veterans Day?

In 2026, Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Veterans Day

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, marking the end of fighting in the First World War on November 11, 1918, and was broadened in 1954 to honour U.S. military veterans. It differs from Memorial Day: Veterans Day recognises service by living and deceased veterans, whereas Memorial Day specifically remembers those who died while serving.

Military service has significant visibility in American Samoa, and many families maintain service connections. The islands were also transformed by wartime construction and the arrival of large numbers of U.S. personnel during the Second World War. A Samoan-centred account can honour individual service while also acknowledging those effects and avoiding claims that service represents one uniform political view among residents.

November 11 is fixed in §1.0501 and falls on Wednesday in 2026. ASG employees receive the statutory paid holiday and federal offices follow the same date. People born in American Samoa are generally U.S. nationals, not automatically citizens; military service does not make those categories interchangeable. Private businesses and continuous services determine operations separately.

How Veterans Day is observed

Traditions of Veterans Day

  • Aiga and community

Families may honour relatives’ service through visits, photographs, prayer or private remembrance without any required public display. Practices differ among families, villages and denominations, so participation should never be treated as uniform.

  • Public life

Official ceremonies may include flags, wreaths, music and veterans’ participation, with programme details announced separately. Samoan language and local protocol may accompany a wider United States or Christian observance.

  • Planning the day

Distinguish Veterans Day from Memorial Day and confirm office, transport and service hours with the responsible organisation. Hospitals, utilities, transport and other essential services may use rosters or grant another day instead.
