When is Commemoration Day?

In 2026, Commemoration Day falls on Monday, November 30, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of Commemoration Day

UAE Commemoration Day is observed annually on November 30 in remembrance of Emiratis who died while carrying out national duties in military, civil and humanitarian fields. The observance was established in 2015 under the name Martyrs’ Day and is now commonly presented in English as Commemoration Day. Its scope is broader than a celebration of one conflict, and neutral description avoids assigning individual deaths to a political narrative not stated by the official programme.

Government bodies, schools and institutions take part in a coordinated ceremony. The flag is lowered, participants observe a minute of silent prayer, and the flag is raised again with the national anthem. These acts centre remembrance, gratitude and support for bereaved families. Emirates News Agency reports the continuing November 30 practice, while the original Presidential Affairs direction provides the institutional history of the half-mast ceremony.

Commemoration Day is not included in Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024 as a statutory paid public holiday, so November 30 remains a working day unless a competent authority issues a separate operational instruction. It should not be merged with the December 2–3 Eid Al Etihad holiday. In 2026 it falls on Monday, allowing institutions to hold ceremonies during the working day without creating an additional nationwide closure.

How Commemoration Day is observed

A nationally coordinated remembrance on November 30, normally observed during a working day rather than as a statutory paid public holiday.

Traditions of Commemoration Day

  • Flag ceremony

Government bodies and participating institutions lower the UAE flag, later raise it again and accompany the ceremony with the national anthem.

  • Minute of silent prayer

Citizens, residents, students and employees may pause together for a minute of silent prayer in honour of those who died on duty.

  • Support and remembrance

Official messages, school programmes and workplace ceremonies recognise bereaved families and discuss service, sacrifice and responsibility to the wider community.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official UAE official and legal guidance. Lunar dates and annual Cabinet, government or employer schedules should be confirmed against official notices.
