When is Ascension Day?

In 2026, Ascension Day falls on Thursday, May 14, 2026. It is classified here as a Austrian public holiday.

History of Ascension Day

Ascension Day, Christi Himmelfahrt, is a nationwide statutory holiday in Austria. It falls on the fortieth day of the Easter season when Easter Sunday is counted as day one, which means the calendar calculation is Easter Sunday plus 39 days. It is consequently always a Thursday. Christian observance commemorates the ascension of Jesus, and Catholic parishes celebrate the feast with Mass and seasonal liturgy.

The Thursday placement often creates discussion of a Fenstertag or bridge day on Friday. That Friday is not automatically a holiday: employees must use leave, time credits or an employer arrangement, and schools or public bodies may publish schedules of their own. Families may combine worship with a long-weekend excursion, but the practical pattern depends on individual work and school arrangements. Regional parish customs exist, yet Ascension’s legal status is nationwide rather than provincial.

Austria’s Working Rest Act expressly lists this date among the statutory holidays. Covered employees are normally entitled to an uninterrupted 24-hour holiday rest period, although authorised essential, transport, hospitality and other exempt work can continue. Austria has no general rule moving a fixed holiday to Monday when it falls on a weekend; the calendar date remains the legal holiday.

How Ascension Day is observed

A movable nationwide statutory holiday on the Thursday 39 days after Easter Sunday; the following Friday is not automatically protected.

Traditions of Ascension Day

  • Ascension Mass

Catholic communities attend feast-day Mass with readings and music centred on Christ’s ascension and the close of his earthly ministry.

  • Parish processions

Some Austrian parishes preserve short outdoor processions, field blessings or rural devotions whose form varies by region and weather.

  • Bridge-weekend excursions

Households with approved Friday leave may use the Thursday holiday for hiking or travel, but the bridge day is voluntary.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Austria government holiday guidance. State, local, school and employer arrangements may differ from the nationwide statutory calendar.
