When is Ascension Day?

History of Ascension Day
Ascension Day is a Christian feast observed 39 days after Easter Sunday, always on a Thursday in the Western church calendar. It recalls the New Testament account of Jesus’s ascension and forms part of the Easter season. In Burundi it is not only an ecclesiastical date: the national holiday decree includes le jour de l’Ascension among paid, non-working public holidays.
Christianity expanded in Burundi through Catholic and Protestant missions during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, under both precolonial royal authority and German and Belgian rule. Churches later became major providers of education and health care as well as influential public institutions. That history involved local conversion, adaptation and leadership alongside colonial power; it should not be told as if Burundians simply received an unchanged European tradition.
Catholic parishes and other congregations may celebrate Mass or services with scripture, preaching and music. Other residents may chiefly experience a weekday closure and time with family. Ascension falls on May 14 in 2026, calculated from Western Easter on April 5. The Friday after it is not automatically a public bridge day, while hospitals and other necessary services can continue with holiday staffing.
How Ascension Day is observed
