When is Christmas Day?
In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a Austrian public holiday.
History of Christmas Day
Christmas Day, Christtag, is Austria’s nationwide statutory holiday on December 25 and the first of two consecutive protected Christmas dates. Christian worship celebrates the birth of Jesus. Much of the household celebration takes place on Heiligabend, December 24, when the Christkind traditionally brings gifts and families gather around the tree, but Christmas Eve is not itself one of the statutory holidays listed in the Working Rest Act.
Austria’s Christmas culture includes Advent markets, wreaths, candles, seasonal biscuits and a rich musical tradition. ‘Silent Night’ was first performed in Oberndorf near Salzburg in 1818 and remains closely associated with Austrian Christmas heritage. On December 25 families may attend Mass, share a formal meal or visit relatives after the more private Christmas Eve celebration. Customs differ between rural and urban households and should not be reduced to a single national menu or timetable.
Austria’s Working Rest Act expressly lists this date among the statutory holidays. Covered employees are normally entitled to an uninterrupted 24-hour holiday rest period, although authorised essential, transport, hospitality and other exempt work can continue. Austria has no general rule moving a fixed holiday to Monday when it falls on a weekend; the calendar date remains the legal holiday.
How Christmas Day is observed
A nationwide statutory holiday on December 25; Christmas Eve celebrations occur the previous day, which is not itself a general statutory holiday.
Traditions of Christmas Day
Christkind gift giving
Many households exchange gifts on Christmas Eve under the Christkind tradition before spending the protected Christmas Day with family.
Church music and Mass
Parishes celebrate Christmas liturgy, while familiar carols including Austria’s ‘Silent Night’ connect worship with the country’s musical heritage.
Family meals and visits
Christmas Day commonly brings an extended family meal or visits, with menus and schedules varying substantially between Austria’s many regions.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Austria government holiday guidance. State, local, school and employer arrangements may differ from the nationwide statutory calendar.
