When is Restoration of Independence Day?
In 2026, Restoration of Independence Day falls on Sunday, October 18, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.
History of Restoration of Independence Day
On October 18, 1991, Azerbaijan's Supreme Council adopted the Constitutional Act on State Independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The act identified the new republic as the legal successor to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic of 1918, linking the restoration of independence to an earlier constitutional tradition.
In 2021 the date was formally renamed the Day of Restoration of Independence, while May 28 became Independence Day. The distinction allows the calendar to remember both the founding of the first republic and the recovery of independence at the end of the Soviet era. The date remains an official holiday but is not listed among Article 105's general days off.
The Constitutional Act was adopted on October 18, 1991 and confirmed by a nationwide referendum on December 29. The 2021 renaming clarified the relationship with May 28: the earlier date remembers the 1918 founding, while October 18 remembers restoration after Soviet rule. The President’s holiday list names October 18, but Article 105 does not classify it as non-working. It therefore has no weekend replacement, shortened holiday eve or Cabinet transfer merely by virtue of the commemoration.
How Restoration of Independence Day is observed
