When is National Day?

In 2026, National Day falls on Wednesday, December 16, 2026. It is classified here as a Bahraini public holiday.

History of National Day

Bahrain National Day is celebrated on December 16 and begins a two-day national break with the anniversary of the accession of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on December 17. Bahrain’s government information also presents December 16 and 17 as the National Days of the kingdom, connecting the celebrations with the country’s 1971 independence and national development.

The season is highly visible in schools, streets and cultural institutions. Flags, red-and-white decorations, artistic performances, fireworks and family outings can appear across the islands, while official programmes stress belonging, heritage and civic pride. The Ministry of Education describes school celebrations built around performances, competitions and creative displays—an indication of how the holiday is carried into the next generation.

Bahrain National Day must be distinguished from the legal date of independence. The National Portal records independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1971, while National Day is December 16 and the official holiday continues on December 17. Contemporary government descriptions connect the National Days with the establishment of the modern Bahraini state under Ahmed Al Fateh in 1783, independence and the country’s later development. December 17 also marks King Hamad’s accession in 1999. These overlapping references explain why the season carries several historical themes without turning December 16 into the literal anniversary of the 1971 independence instrument.

How National Day is observed

The first of two consecutive nationwide public holidays on December 16 and 17. Government offices, banks and many workplaces close.
