When is National Heroes Day?
In 2026, National Heroes Day falls on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. It is a Barbadian public holiday. Public and bank closures apply under the Public Holidays Act, subject to essential-service and official in-lieu rules.
History of National Heroes Day
National Heroes Day was first celebrated on April 28, 1998, the centenary of the birth of Sir Grantley Adams. The Order of National Heroes Act created the national framework and initially recognised ten people associated with freedom, faith, social justice, political development, labour and sporting excellence. Each National Hero carries the Barbadian style “The Right Excellent.”
The roll begins with Bussa, killed in the 1816 struggle against enslavement, and includes Sarah Ann Gill, Samuel Jackman Prescod, Charles Duncan O’Neal, Clement Payne, Grantley Adams, Errol Barrow, Hugh Springer, Frank Walcott and Garfield Sobers. Robyn Rihanna Fenty became the eleventh National Hero in 2021, so older official calendar copy that still says ten is no longer current.
April 28 is a statutory public holiday, transferred to Monday when it falls on Sunday. National Heroes Square, parish programmes, schools and the Season of Emancipation provide settings for learning about the individuals rather than reducing them to a single heroic ideal. Barbados uses their contrasting lives to ask how courage, excellence and public service can be expressed in different generations.

Season of Emancipation programmes associate heroes with parishes and local stages, distributing national remembrance beyond Bridgetown’s central institutions.

Ceremonies and visits may centre on the renamed Bridgetown square, whose public setting links Parliament, memory and civic discussion.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Barbados Public Holidays Act. Barbados has specific in-lieu rules for Sunday public holidays, including Tuesday rules for Emancipation Day and Christmas Day; official notices can also add one-off public holidays.
